Here is a little history. In 1926 Abe Saperstein organized and coached a new basketball team called the Savoy Big Five. In 1927 they changed the name to Saperstein's New York Globetrotters later changing their name to the Harlem New York Globetrotters to let people know they were going to be watching black people. The joking around and making fun of the other teams began in 1939 when the Globetrotters had a 112-5 lead over their opponents and began to mock them. Saperstein said as long as they win they can do that. Thats how the legacy began. The team has had many great players but the most notable must be NBA great Wilt Chamberlain.

The Harlem Globetrotters made an appearance on Futurama in the episode "Time Keeps On Slipping". On a sunny day in the park on Earth a large UFO landed and out stepped the aforementioned masters of mirth. They came from the Globetrotter Homeworld after living for centuries in peace with Earth. But for no reason they came to challenge Earth to a basketball game. There were no consequences and nothing was at stake in this challenge. Naturally, Professor Farnsworth took up the challenge with his atomic mutant supermen. Earth was ahead for most of the game, but when Fry was put into the game for the last two minutes of play, he blew a 100+ point lead and Earth lost the game.

Some of the Globetrotters who visited Earth include Ethan "Bubblegum" Tate, Sweet Clyde, and Curly Joe.

In addition to their game skills, all of the Globetrotters are master physicists who specialize in using razzle-dazzle algebra, only bringing out the real math at the final moments of the game.

Bender has an obsession with becoming a Harlem Globetrotter.
