Novel by Robin Cook; medical thriller, as are all of his novels.

The central character is sort of a tragic protagonist, an incredibly talented heart surgeon who loves his work just a little too much. In open-heart surgery, with his hands through a split rib-cage, massaging a heart back into life with his gloved fingers, he feels like God. This obssession pushes to unnecessary surgery and beyond.

The degree of literary skill is somewhere between Stephen King and Ian Fleming.
