"Gassy" Jack Deighton is ostensibly the first settler of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. This saloon-keeper is immortalized by a grotesque statue in Maple Tree Square, in the area where his Saloon stood until it was destroyed by the Great Fire of 1886.
