The
Julie Gold song made
popular by
Nanci Griffith and, I guess,
Bette Midler is generally seen as peace anthem.
But I'm nagged by a sense that it may instead be a sly indictment of God.
Sure, from a distance, everything looks great. The world looks green and blue and there are no wars, there is no disease, no poverty.
And from where does God see Earth? From a distance.
The song reminds us in chorus that God is watching us, God is watching us. From a distance.
Which explains a lot about why God does not step in to end poverty, disease and war. From a distance, everything looks fine.
