There are a number of literary awards and prizes that are made in
respect of an author's first published novel. The Encore award,
administered by the Society of Authors and first awarded in 1990,
is different in that it recognises an author's second novel.
The prize fund was £7,500 in the years 1990 to 1999, being
increased to £10,000 from 2000 onwards, with the money being shared
out equally in those years (1990, 1998, 2000) when the judges were
unable to pick a single winner. The Encore award was an annual award
from its inception until 2005, but is now a biennial award, with the
2007 prize being made in respect of the best second novel published
in the years 2005 to 2006. The judges for the 2007 award were Alex
Clark, Lindsay Duguid and Peter Parker with the eventual winner
Maria Hyland receiving her award at a reception held at the
Institute of Contemporary Arts on the 22nd May 2007.
