Common abbreviation of Deutsche Volksunion (German People's Union), a rightist political party in Germany. Founded in 1971, the party is basically owned by the millionaire Gerhard Frey. It never managed to achieve representation in the Bundestag, but did manage to get into some local or state parliaments. The DVU thrives mainly on populistic and nationalistic anti-government sentiments, and it does not cooperate with the other 2 rightist parties in Germany, NPD and Republikaner; actually they are fierce rivals. According to its inofficial owner (he always tried to deny it, but eventually had to admit that the party campaigns were mostly funded by him personally), the party's aim is to force the big conservative parties (like CDU and CSU) to become more rightist in order to avoid losing votes to the DVU.
