Cripple Creek is a traditional banjo song that is often one of the first that new banjoliers learn to play. It is a very happy melody, and can be downloaded at http://banjoben.com/banjolessons.

Cripple Creek is also the name of a town in Colorado. Today, it is primarily a summer resort, but it used to be a gold-mining boomtown. Gold was discovered in 1891 on a cattle ranch, and the town became the largest camp in the whole region. In 1902, gold production declined, but a drainage tunnel was opened in 1941 that cleared out formerly flooded mines, and new veins of gold were discovered. Violent miner strikes occured in 1893 and 1904. Today, the old mines and casinos are the main tourist attractions.
