Cornelius Alexander "Connie" Mack (
1862-
1956) was the legendary manager of the
Philadelphia Athletics for 50 years, from
1901 to
1951, the longest managerial stint in
baseball history. The "Tall Tactician", who was known for wearing a dignified business suit in the dugout instead of a uniform, won five
World Series titles and built two
Athletics dynasties - the club that went to four Series in five years from
1910 to
1914, and the team that won two out of three championships from
1929 to
1931. The
1929 club is considered one of the greatest baseball teams of all time. Mack, who holds the all time mark for victories as a manager with 3,731, was elected to the
Baseball Hall of Fame in
1937.
