Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) means any self-propelled or towed
motor vehicle used on a highway in
interstate commerce to transport passengers or property when the vehicle-
- Have a gross weight rating of 10,001 or more pounds.
- Vehicles designed or used to transport 8 or more passengers, including the driver, for compensation.
- Vehicles designed or used to transport 15 or more passenger, including the driver, and is not used to transport passengers for compensation.
- Any vehicle transporting hazardous materials and which is required to be placarded.
Some states may vary in their definition but many have adopted the federal definition. Before operating a vehicle which may fall under this definition check with your state for their definition.
