The genus for a group of lovely dicots often with a woody vine growth habit. Their leaves are usually cordate and their flowers are tube shaped or smoking pipe shaped. The flowers are usually earthy, deep shades of brown and purple and often have a noxious stench (as is often the case with brown flowers). They are members of the Aristolochiaceae along with the genus Asarum.
