Genetic code for the amino acid Methionine (Met., M). Methionine is the first amino acid in every protein product of every gene in the world (!!!!!!!). So the coding sequence of every gene begins with "ATG" (or AUG, if you speak RNA). It doesn't have to be the first ATG/AUG in the mRNA molecule, however. This is part of what makes genomics interesting.
