ATA is an acronym standing for AT attachment (AT stands for Advanced Technology and was coined by IBM) ATA and IDE (Integrated Drive Electronics) are basically just two differnt names for the same thing. Back in the early days when everyone was looking to label everything with an acronym there were some copyright problems which led to ATA as another acronym for the data transfer protocol that IDE hard drives use.
