In the Netherlands, the AEX index is generally recognised as a reliable barometer of the stock market and thus of the Dutch economy as a whole. The index is a weighted average of the 25 most actively traded shares on the Amsterdam Exchanges stock market. It started in 1983 at an indexed level of 100 (equal to 45.38 guilders). On 30 December 1998 (the last day on which it was calculated in guilders), it stood at 1,186.38 (538.36 guilders) - an average increase of 17.9%.
