The area code now representing most of north Orange County, California (please see the second writeup) in the NANP.

This code was originally part of 213 until the 1960s, when it split off; at that time until the 1980s, it covered about 1/3 of the state of California, requiring many dialers in that area to dial 1 before the seven digit number.

In 1982, area code 619 was created to address predicted expansion in most of the former area code (north San Bernardino County, eastern Riverside County, San Diego County, Imperial County, and along the Sierra Nevadas); the 909 area code was created in 1990ish (Remaining Inland Empire that was covered by 714), and 949 was created for south Orange County in the mid 1990s.
