I actually looked it up on the Caltrans site - here in Hollywood where I work, the 101 freeway carries 19,500 cars an HOUR! That is more cars than there are people in the town where I grew up, passing a single place in an hour. Apparently the 101 is at 350% its designed capacity. Most astonishing was an article in Scientific American about how contemorary traffic engineers basically admit that building bigger roads doesn't work. Thanks! 50 years of massive, life-destroying highways, and you now admit it was a terrible mistake.
