I’m 76 years old
And I’ve never learnt to swim
But I’ve watched the sea
From my window wondered
How people float

When I was 6 I tried
I blew up my water wings waded
Until the ocean kissed my waist
Realising I wasn’t drowning I
Thought I might be a superhero

I’ve felt invincible since
Exchanged water wings for beer mats
And never troubled the sea
Except to float my bad days
In the shallows as jetsam
