On October 23, 2001 David Blunkett, the Labour Home Secretary for the UK, announced the following changes to the law on cannabis, to be made effective shortly:

Cannabis will be moved from Category B to Category C - the level of steroids or anti-depressent drugs.
Cannabis possession will no longer be an arrestable offence
The maximum penalty for offences regarding cannabis - such as dealing - will be 2 years.

It is also probable that it will soon be legalised for medical use.

Although the government and the media have tried not to make the comparison, this means that the legal position of cannabis in the UK is roughly equivalent to that in Holland.
