Faith in God gives you strength. There was no "divine favourism" implied. Belief in God gives gives your life meaning. It's not the only way, or necessarily the best way, but it's that athlete's way, and so he thanked God for the strength He gave him.
By representing theism as "divine favourism" you're arguing against a Straw Man.
