a vulcanian eruption is typefied by an explosion of gas from the crater which is heavily laden with ash which forms a white cloud near the upper level of the cone. a large grey or black cloud muchrooms upward. lightning in the cloud is common. any lava that is ejected is thick and viscous, and the explosion of materials is usually moderate to violent.


vulcanian eruptions are named after the cone of Vulcano, a volcanic island west of Italy.
