Small Swedish town near Stockholm, which lent its name to no fewer than four elements (see Ytterbium, Yttrium, Erbium, and Terbium). A chemist named Johan Gadolin found a new ore near there and called it yttria, thinking it to be a element, but it turned out to be a mixture. Eventually things were sorted out.
