Group of islands just off the eastern tip of New Guinea and northwest of Vanuatu. Formerly a protectorate of the United Kingdom, they became independent in 1978. Occupied by the Japanese during World War II, they contain the island of Guadalcanal where one of the best-known battles of that war took place.
