This Unicode block encodes technical symbols, including keytop labels such as U+232B    erase to the left. Excluded from consideration were symbols that are not normally used in one-dimensional text but are intended for two-dimensional diagrammatic use, such as symbols for electronic circuits. An unusually large expansion space is provided because it is anticipated that a large number of technical symbols could eventually be considered for addition to the Unicode standard.

APL (A Programming language) makes extensive use of functional symbols constructed by composition with other, more primitive functional symbols. It made extensive use of backspace and overstrike mechanisms in early computer implementations. In principle, functional composition is productive in APL; in practice, a relatively small number of composed functional symbols have become standard operators in APL. This relatively small set is encoded in its entirety in this block. All other APL extensions can be encoded by composition of other Unicode characters.

Unicode's Miscellaneous Technical code block reserves the 256 code points from U+2300 to U+23FF, of which 232 are currently assigned.
