(1550-1617) Scottish mathematician. Inventor of logarithms, and of square rods that had numerical tables on each of the sides, for aid in calculating multiplication and division.

He also invented an artillery piece that could hit a cow a mile away. Horrified by the weapon's accuracy, he stopped production and suppressed the cannon's design.
