The Ensemble Modern is a
musical group based in
Germany which specializes in
contemporary music. Currently, there are
21 virtuosi who make up the group, but often the group will supplement with other musicians for special projects.
Their ability to play highly complex music with difficult rhythms and multiple tempi has made their services invaluable to conductors or composers who want to have certain works performed, such as some chamber arrangements of Conlon Nancarrow's player piano etudes. The group has played music by many famous composers, including Steve Reich, Louis Andriessen, Kurt Weill, Hanns Eisler, Ornette Coleman, Anthony Braxton, Edgard Varèse, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Frank Zappa.
They have been featured on more than 30 CDs, released on various labels.
