The merrow is an Irish version of a mermaid. The men and women merrows are very different: The men are ugly, with piggy eyes and red faces, and crazy green hair that matches their teeth. The females are simply beautiful half-women half fish, also with green hair but attractive. They are said to share hair-combing tendencies with their mermaid cousins, but mermaids tend to have more foul tempers, what with luring sailors to their deaths and creating storms and all. Merrows are quite the opposite; they play in the water together, generally live underwater in shipwrecks but never cause them, and have been known to save sailors from drowning and serve as guides for lost voyagers.
