AtheOS is a new free
OS for the Intel Architecture written from scratch by
Kurt Skauen. It is released under the
GPL.
It's creation was inspired by BeOS. Since the kernel was written from scratch it handles SMP very well. It does not run a X-windows, instead it has its own multithreaded GUI system. The GUI has been reported to look like Amiga OS, this is a very important feature for Amigans.
The OS is currently only available for the Intel architechture because that is the only development platform that Kurt has at the moment. Porting to other platforms is possible since it is coded using a flat paged memory model.
