The original
CD-ROM unit for the
PC Engine, and the first instance of a home
video game console using
CD-ROM technology. The CD-ROM² unit, about the same size as the
PCE itself, was useless for game-playing (and not so great for portable CD-playing either) unless you bought the
Interface Unit so you could actually make it talk to the PCE. Like
other early CD-ROM systems, the CD-ROM² was single-speed.
Classics such as Ys Book I & II and Cosmic Fantasy first arrived on CD format, until NEC saw need to increase the power of the PCE even more by introducing the Super CD-ROM².
