Used to be done to almost all children in the United States in the 1950s and 1960s whenever they got strep throat; as more was learned about the lymph nodes and their role in controlling disease, the procedure was done only to people who had chronic tonsilitis, like myself. I had tonsilitis 11 times in 12 months before they yanked the things.
