In other words, when a
photon strikes a
surface, ( usually some kind of
metal in the examples I have read ) sometimes it is of the right
frequency to dislodge an electron from the
atom. The
charged particle can be collected by a
magnetic pole, where it essentially becomes
electricity.
Einstien formulated the basic theory that covers this: it became the foundation for modern
quantum physics.
Intrestingly,
the amount of electrons produced does not increase with the intensity of light. Einstein found that only the
wavelength of the photons mattered.
