Tracheids are
water-conducting cells of the
xylem. They are dead and hollow at
maturity and have
secondary walls.
Tracheids are long, tapered cells similar to the fibers of sclerenchyma. Water passes from one tracheid to the next through pits that penetrate the cell walls.
The lignified walls provide support to the plant.
