Francis Bacon, a twentieth century artist made a series of paintings based on Velazquez' portrait of Pope Innocent X. The original, a standard portrait of a member of the ruling elite of his day, stood out for the lush velvet colors of the robe worn by the pope. Of course Bacon, in typical fashion, chose to depict what was going on behind the austere, regal pose showing, in most of the paintings he based off of Velazquez' portrait, an image of pure terror. The pope's face had been distorted into that of a scream and the entire background had been altered to be completely black except for some dark purple streaks that resembled a curtain of sorts. An interesting case of two painters taking the same subject and the result being completely different.
