To bleed the monkey / to suck the monkey
Seafarer's term for "adjusting fluid levels in a barrel", i.e. to drill a small hole in a barrel and steal drink (alcohol mostly) with a straw.
With a sufficiently small hole the air pressure will keep the fluid inside the barrel and nobody will notice that some is missing (hopefully).
