A portmanteau word - from Japanese sandals. Jandals started production in New Zealand in 1957, and are still going strong. The most popular colour is blue & white. Made of rubber, they are a sole with a v-shaped strap that goes between your big toe & the next one (index toe??). The name is unique to New Zealand. They are a cultural icon there as well.

They are also known as thongs (in Australia) and flip-flops.
