The flesh of the conger has a high reputation in Spain and the Atlantic coast of France. In Belle-Île it is even known as boeuf bellilois. Also esteemed in SW England and Wales. The range of Conger conger (the chief species sought as food) extends from the North Atlantic to South Africa, but other species of conger replace it elsewhere. In Indo-Pacific waters the principal conger is Muranenosox cinereus, which sometimes enters fresh waters.
