As recounted by Dr. Seuss, they come in two varieties: star-bellied and plain-bellied. "The star-bellied Sneetches have bellies with stars, while the plain-bellied Sneetches have none upon thars." The star-bellied Sneetches enjoyed privileged status in Sneetch society and acted in a discriminatory manner to their plain-bellied brethren, until an outside agitator confused their society by inducing the Sneetches to make use of his machines to add or remove stars, until the original star status of each Sneetch was in doubt; this intervention was not done for entirely selfless motives, as the intervener collected a fee for each application of his machines.

Mexican children's entertainer Tatiana wears stage outfits featuring a large star on her belly, much like a Sneetch.
