A derogatory term for the single golden bar worn on the uniforms of O-1 grade officers in the U.S. Military. Second Lieutenants (in the Army, Air Force and Marine Corps) and Ensigns (in the Navy) are the most basic officers and despite rigorous training and college degrees, tend to flop around in their new jobs in a manner similar to interns. The rank insignia is both a warning and an excuse to higher officers and experienced enlisted men.
