A river running through
Appalachia, particularly the states of
North Carolina,
West Virginia,
Kentucky,
Virginia.
The
New River has been dated as the second oldest river in the world, and one of the few rivers that runs north. State and Federal parks,
biking trails, and
campgrounds dot the shores of the
New River along its entire length. The headwaters of the river are in
North Carolina.
It has been named an
American Heritage River.
