chucalho is a traditional Brazilian
percussion instrument. They can easily be made at home. Chucalhos are nothing more a large steel can with a number of rocks inside, they are shaken to produce a rattling sound.
Sand can even be used.Even very poor musicians [ in the
financial sense ] can afford one, which is why the instrument is popular among indiginous musicians. A good piece of music that uses the chucalho is the
Weather Report song
Boogie Woogie Waltz from their album
Sweetnighter. it is used by
Dom um Ramao to produce a rattling sound that meshes will with brushed
drums.
More expensive chucalhos are shakers with cymbal shaped metal disks inside.
