A highly explosive compound, made by saturating cotton with
nitric and
sulphuric acids, and allowing it to dry.
Soluble guncotton (pyroxylin) is used in making collodion, and when compounded with camphor it makes celluloid.
It is sometimes incorrectelly called nitrocellulose. It is not a nitro compound, but an ethereal salt of nitric acid.
