Software synthesizer - a computer program that outputs an audio signal, based on the user's input and interaction. Soft-synths are availble in many shapes and formats, such as standalone applications, plug-ins, built-in applets, etc.
Soft-synths are fun. Playing with soft-synth controls even without really knowing what's what can be very enjoyable, much like playing with 'real' synths, but much much cheaper.
