is an acronym for Defense Reutilization and Marketing Office. DRMO is part of the Department of Defense
of the United States
What can we do with that box of hammers that the US Government paid $250 for? Why, we can sell them or give them away! DRMO takes everything that is no longer needed by an organization and stores it. The first group of people who get first dibs at the 'Junque' includes the Department of Defense, the Military Services, and other federal groups. After that, state governments can try for the items. Whatever is left over is offered to non-profit organizations, then offered for sale through auctions.
It is amazing what you can find for auction. I've seen 250-foot radio towers (with built-in elevators), LSD landing craft (combination boat and truck), radios, televisions, medical equipment, aircraft engines, almost anything you can think of, all up for auction.
To get on the auction mailing list, you need to visit http://www.drms.dla.mil for information. Sign up for a list, and you can go buy silly things for pennies on the dollar. I used to buy surplus electronics and computer parts and sell them on eBay or donate them to schools and day-care facilities.
Additional Info: I just did a check as to what was available locally. Items ranged from Sun Sparcstations to a dump truck to chemical environmental suits. Items are added daily.
