Turbo-prop engines are used in many modern propeller driven aircraft where efficiency, increased range and reduced noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) are required.

They comprise a gas turbine which is used to drive a conventional propeller by means of a power take off and a reduction gear box.

Additional power and efficiency is achieved by directing the latent thrust of the gas turbine engine rearwards, such that it augments the thrust provided by the propeller.
