El Mozote was a
village in El Salvador's
red zone during the
civil war that took place in the 1980's. It was the center of a
massacre in 1981, in which the El Salvadoran army attempted to get rid of the
communist threat. It has been estimated that somewhere between 500-800
men,
women and
children were killed in El Mozote and the surrounding villages.
A book was written by Mark Danner on the subject that has a section including government findings and the list of names of the people that died. The list has over 700 persons listed, most of whom are not named because there was no one left to remember their names.
