Crowther, Samuel Adjai, the first negro bishop of the Church of England; was born in Yoruba. He was carried into slavery in 1821, but was freed, along with a large company of his countrymen, by a British man-of-war in 1822, and landed at Sierra-Leone, where he had the advantages of a school and soon became an excellent scholar.
