The McKitterick Prize is administered by the Society of Authors and awarded in respect of a first novel (published or unpublished) by an author over the age of forty. The prize was endowed by Tom McKitterick, the former editor of the Political Quarterly, whose novel (presumably written after he'd reached the age of forty) was never published. The value of the prize was £5,000 from 1990 until 1996 when it was reduced to £4,000.
