Region of New York, located in the south central area of the state, south of the Finger Lakes and north of the Pennsylvania border.

Major cities/towns in the region include Binghamton, Elmira, and Corning. Some also consider Ithaca to be a part of the southern tier, although it's located on the south end of Cayuga Lake (one of the Finger Lakes).

The major highway in the region is state route 17 (also known as the Southern Tier Expressway, which will become Interstate 86 in several years).

Summers are warm, but winters are cold and snowy. Relatively uneventful region of the state.
