It's also worth mentioning that the word 'surrealism' derives from the French
word 'surréalisme', which means 'beyond realism' (sur réalisme
). In English, 'super realism' is an acceptable translation, although the use of the word 'super' tends to make people think of the photo-realistic
school of painting.
Many surrealist painters were capable of photo-realism, although whereas photo-realists attempt to amplify reality through detail, the surrealists wanted to subvert the very notion of 'reality'.
