Supposedly the final words of J M
Turner, spoken as he died in his bedroom in
Chelsea, overlooking the
Thames. It was an entirely appropriate epitaph for a painter whose most famous works were love-letters to the sun. The phrase bears comparison with the last words of
Goethe, "Mehr Licht!".
There's a great deal of objective truth to the statement, too - all energy, and thus all life on Earth, is derived either directly or indirectly from the Sun's power, and thus if there is a 'life force', it is the Sun. This has been the basis of many religions, although Turner himself was devoutly Christian.
