Selinon is the greek word for
celery, and it can be cited in
Homer's
The Odyssey. It is appropriate that the Greeks would have the first word for celery, as it is a plant native to the
Mediterranean region, and they were of the most
civilized nations at the time.
There is a greek colony, Selinus, which was named for the plant growing in the area, considered holy plant.

It is a member of the carrot family.
