A concept related to
inventory and
process manufacturing. When creating a
batch you assign and track that particular batch a
lot number or
batch number, similar to a
serial number. Then as batches are
filled and
shipped who recieves
product from which batch can be
tracked. This is useful for
recalls or when
investigating customer complaints.
Lot tracking is not limited to finished goods. Raw materials may also be tracked. In this case if off spec or bad batches are being produced and a bad batch of raw materials were to be identified one would be able to identify and correct or dispose of other finished goods that used the same bad shipment of the offending raw material.
